Brad Inggs, founder and owner of Orbital Horizon was invited to give a presentation on his company to the European Commission, discuss policy, space entrepreneurship and skills development in the space sector.
The European Commission hosted the event in Pretoria, South Africa with the Department of Science and Technology. The event provided a platform to share policies and strategies on development related to space business, science, technology, engineering, earth observation and satellite navigation.
Inggs discussed the activities of Orbital Horizon, how it was merging space and finance and how the financial side of space development, in general, seemed to lack in depth and sustainability. He highlighted how cybersecurity and related threats were a growing area in the space sector that needed more attention. He mentioned how gaming and simulators should be used more for training and policy analysis. He also mentioned how the South African mining and energy sector could tap into their expertise and get involved in space resources. Touching last but not least on the development and attraction of skills, Inggs explained how more could be done.
He also raised the importance of communication between government and business regarding space policy, less state competitors and more commercial competition, respect of intellectual property laws as well as how the creation of a business friendly climate was highly important for the expansion of the South African space sector for jobs and innovation, locally and internationally.
The European Commission is the executive body of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding the EU treaties and managing the day-to-day business of the European Union.
